Who would know that an encounter between Captain Bob Maloubier, Lieutenant Claude Riffaud and Blancpain would pave the way for the birth of the Fifty Fathoms? The French Ministry of Defense assigned these two people to create an elite unit of combat divers and after discovering that no existing watch that can withstand the rigors of underwater missions, they turned to Blancpain.
Armed with specific technical specifications such as the unidirectional bezel and with a vision to provide an extreme watch for an extreme mission, the two came to Blancpain requesting them to develop a masterpiece watch. It became a reality in 1953 when the first 50 fathoms watch, referring to its water resistance, was launched
After several years, that resistant was increased to a depth of 300 meters and as a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the timepiece the limited edition Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Chronograph Flyback was issued.
This watch has a stainless steel case and a black domed sapphire unidirectional revolving bezel that is guaranteed scratch-proof. This is one watch you can use not just on top of the water level but even in lakes or oceans.
